Pleae note, children under 8 can stay for free with their parents. As the dormitories are all mixed sex, all people under 16 must stay in a private room.
We always have space, so don't listen to the taxi driver if he tells you we are full or closed - he is just trying to take you somewhere else where they pay commission (probably JC and Friends or La Cuesta).
On arrival, we accept all major credit cards and cash in colones, US dollars and Euros.

Safety
Travelling can be stressful and we realise how important it is to feel safe in your hostel and so we have established some extra safety measures to be sure that you don't experience any problems. The hostel is in a safe area (our next door neighbour's the Spanish Embassy) on a main road so it is light at all times of day and night. We have receptionists working 24 hours a day to ensure the property is safe and in case you need any help. We also have lockers in the dorms that you can use to keep your passports and valuables in.
Food
We have a fully equipped kitchen that you can use during the day and evening to cook your own food. There is plenty of space in the fridge that you are welcome to use. We want our guests to make use of our newly renovated kitchen and provide the essentials such as oil, salt and sugar.
We have pots, pans, knives, plates, and cutlery.
We don't have a restaurant, but are within walking distance of many different options and have the menus for all the local take-away places. You can buy drinks and snacks at the reception.
Click here for a list of restaurants nearby.
Shop
At the reception we sell a variety of snacks, soft drinks, cold beers, wines, cigarettes and telephone cards.

Books for local schools
We sell second-hand books and use ALL the profits to buy textbooks for local schools. You can swap two of your used books for one of ours for free, pay $2 plus one book for one of ours, or pay $4 to buy one of our books. Every month we use the money to buy the books that the school needs most and put a photo up on the notice board so you can track exactly where your donations are going.
TV and movies
We have cable TV in the common area that you can watch any time of the day or night. We have regular movie nights and you are always welcome to borrow a DVD from our massive DVD library.
Laundry service
We can wash and dry your clothes for a small charge, please ask at the reception for more information.
Travel information
All our receptionists know about tourism in Costa Rica and will be happy to help you plan your trip. Please look at the tour section of the website to see the tours that we offer at a discounted rate, but we are of course happy to book any tour for you. You can find out some more information about travelling in Costa Rica in the Costa Rica section of the Molino Rojo Hostel website.
About Us
We're a group of international people who have years of experience working in hostels. Now that we know exactly what travellers need and want, we have decided to start a new project for tourists to feel comfortable and safe in a place that offers the same services as a hotel but for a lot less money. We all live in Costa Rica and can help you plan your trip. the Molino Rojo Hostel is not designed to be just a hotel, but rather a place for travellers to meet and share their cultures and travel stories - the building was designed with plenty of common spaces to socialise in.
The Molino Rojo Hostel is Costa Rican owned and we donate a proportion of our profits to local schools. The environment is important to us and we pride ourselves in being eco-friendly and recycle all drink bottles and cans.
Listen to music, drink a cold beer, cook food with friends in the communal kitchen and enjoy sharing your experiences in Costa Rica. We are not a "party hostel" but we want to be really sociable...and what better way to be sociable than to share a few beers and listen to good music with other travellers?
